This project is the first hotel of Courtyard by Marriott in the Nordic region, and also the first modular steel structure hotel project in Iceland, which marks the official opening of CIMC Modularization in the Nordic market.
Located at Reykjavik Airport in Iceland, the hotel is designed as an L-shaped four-storey building. Guests can enjoy a direct view of aircraft takeoffs and landings from their hotel rooms.
The ground floor adopts a conventional steel structure layout, accommodating public areas such as the hotel lobby, restaurant and parking lot. The 2nd to 4th floors each contain 26 modular units, with a total of 78 modules adopted for the whole project. The hotel is equipped with 150 guest rooms and 6 multi-functional rooms, including standard rooms and accessible rooms for people with disabilities.
Iceland sits in the central North Atlantic Ocean, close to the Arctic Circle at high latitudes and near the Icelandic Low-pressure zone, with highly volatile weather all year round. The extreme weather conditions brought enormous challenges to on-site construction, as well as building quality and safety control. Only 5 to 6 months per year are available for outdoor construction operations.
Furthermore, Iceland’s special geographical and climatic environment demands higher performance standards for building materials including structural steel, fire protection, sound insulation and daylighting systems. The project fully meets local Icelandic construction codes while complying with the more stringent global quality specifications of Marriott Hotels.
After comprehensive assessment, the client finally selected CIMC Modular Building for its outstanding comprehensive strength. Modular units were shipped successively from CIMC Modular Building's factory in June 2019, and the installation of the last module was completed on August 14. The hotel was fully completed in April 2020 and ready for official opening.
Upon successful project delivery, the general contractor spoke highly of the hotel' s overall construction quality. During the on-site installation phase, the management team of project owner Marriott conducted an on-site inspection and was greatly impressed by the premium interior and construction quality of the guest rooms.
