In 2004, due to the worsening severe housing shortage and rising high rental prices in Amsterdam, the Dutch government decided to adopt a modular building system to develop a green temporary accommodation solution for students, constructing a movable container campus for them.
The student apartment is equipped with 1,000 rooms with 100% factory-completed interior finishing, adopting the standard 40-foot container size and a modern and simple decoration style. In addition to the necessary water and electricity installations, we have also equipped each room with kitchen, network and other living facilities according to students' needs.
The project achieved great success and attracted worldwide attention, making Amsterdam the city with the largest number of container buildings in the world at that time. Although the project was initially planned to stay at this location for only 5 years (and would be relocated to a new site), the relocation was eventually postponed to 2018. The project broke ground at the end of 2005 (the first batch of 60 residential units was put into use in September 2005) and was fully completed in May 2006.
Thirteen years later, this temporary apartment building perfectly completed its first service period mission. It was fully relocated from Amsterdam to Groningen for recycling and reuse, and the apartment was quickly assembled on-site in only 8 weeks, starting its second phase of circular and green use.
